iPhone 13 & iPhone 13 Pro Unboxing & Overview (All Models)

Fall has arrived, and with that comes another iPhone announcement from Apple. Apple recently updated their flagship smartphone lineup with the new iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

As this year’s release is more of an iterative update, the design of the phone has generally remained the same but with it comes performance improvements, camera updates, new finishes and more. Beginning with the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13, it features the same flat-edge design but now with a 20% smaller notch and diagonally arranged cameras. The insides have also been redesigned to house a bigger battery. The iPhone 13 Mini supposedly lasts 1.5 hours longer than the 12 Mini, and the iPhone 13 lasts 2.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 are also available in 5 new colors including Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Product (RED).

On the inside, the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini both feature the new A15 Bionic chip, a 5nm chip featuring a 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU that is 50% faster than the leading competition and allows for 30% faster graphics performance. The display has also been upgraded to an Apple OLED Super Retina XDR display that is 28% brighter at 800 nits and has support for Dolby Vision, HDR 10, and HLG.

Of course, both the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 also come with many camera improvements. The new diagonal orientation is so that both cameras can benefit from sensor shift stabilization. The Wide camera has a 12MP sensor and f/1.6 aperture for 47% more light gathering. While the UltraWide has a new faster 12MP sensor and a f/2.4 aperture. Apple has also released many new software improvements including Cinematic mode to alter focus, Photography Styles, Dolby Vision HDR recording, and more.

The iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 are available for $699 and $799 respectively, and start with 128GB of storage, with 512GB options available.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max come with all of the features in the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13, and then some. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max also feature the same flat edge design, but come in 4 new finishes including Graphite, Gold, Silver, and the new Sierra Blue.

In terms of performance, the Pro models are also running the A15 Bionic chip, but have 5 GPU cores as opposed to 4 for a 50% graphics improvement. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro max also both have ProMotion displays which allows for variable refresh rates from 10hz all the way to 120hz.

The camera system on the Pro models has also been overhauled. The triple camera setup features a 77mm telephoto for 3x optical zoom, a f/1.8 UltraWide for 92% improvement in lowlight, and a f/1.5 Wide shooter for 2.2x improvement in lowlight. Software features on the Pro models include macro mode, night photography on all three cameras, and are able to record 4K30FPS ProRes footage.

Both Pro models also come with improved battery life, with the iPhone 13 Pro lasting 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max lasting 2.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are priced at $999 and $1099 respectively, and are available in a 1TB storage option.
